[Blog] Delaney, Healy, Martin and Co
Written by superblueflude on Thursday, 22nd Oct 2009 12:53

I've written pieces about Roy Keane and how good strong support can help our team get back to winning ways. But I thought I'd ask for supporters' comments on some of Keane's signings.

Wise move of mine? Probably not, however you may feel differently about some of the signings and admit that although some may have not turned out how you expected, the blame shouldn't really be aimed at the manager.

Starting off, how many of you have gone shopping, seen a a product on the shelf, you've picked it up, gave it a good look and read the back of the packaging to see what it does. You buy it, take it home and then you're shocked at how bad the product actually is. The same for food, how many take aways do you buy that end up being thrown away?

Think of this and now think of Delaney, Healy and Martin. To us their performances have been, well let's just say not that great, to be polite. But surely Keane must have seen something in these players to bring them to our club.

With that in mind, instead of thinking Keane made a big mistake signing them, how about thinking, maybe they are not as good as first thought. How many players all over the world are bought and sold, and then suddenly these very players are labelled as mistakes, but whose mistake?

I can't believe that each time a player is bought, the manager has to take the blame. Surely the player themselves has to take the blame.

The problem is we can't just send Delaney or Healy back like we can with shop products with a receipt, but what we can do is use them to our benefits, making sure the first teamers understand that although these two are not in the first team at present, big changes can happen and this can keep the team on their toes.

Look at Leadbitter, Edwards and Rosenior, three fantastic players who are beginning to show their worth, players Keane has also brought in. So, come on Delaney, Healy and Martin, how about showing the fans why we bought you and not let Keane take the rap.

I poeted this on antoher thread when perhaps this was the best thread to do it, so I am reposting it here.

Let's take a look at RK sigings and other players:

Healy: Was he he not worth a gamble at the price we paid? Before his long term injury he was very highly thought of. RK must think he can get him back to that kind of standard and hopefully he will.

Delaney: He was bought as a left back, yet if you ask any Hull fan they will tell you his best position is at centre back. He shows signs of being a very good defender, though his one problem with playing at LB is he is too slow and he can't always get back to defend in time. The matches I have seen him play this season he was no where near as bad as other defenders for example Bruce who we should have got shot of. Worse CB I have seen in 40 years.

Ledbitter/Colbeck/Edwards/Rossi: Nuff said

Martin: Now there is mixed feelings among the fans about this lad. RK must think he can bring him on and Beattie likes him so I'll trust one of the greatest legands opinions on this.

Prisken: Again mixed reviews from fans. David Johnson mrk II rates him and reackons he gets better every time he sees him. Missed preseason and was away alot on international duty. My gut feeling is he will come good. a lot of Watford fans rated him.

Now about some of our older players.
D. Wright, every one said he was awful in the game against Forest and RK dropped him now he has brought him back he is meaner and hungrier and played out of his skin on saturday. Seems to be a good bit of man management on RK's part.

Garvan: The enigma...he has so much promise but was happy to go along where he just showed up for games. RK has dropped him and instead of the prima donna attitude, where he could have left instead he chose to stay get his head down and win his place back, he also is working with the coaches on extra training working on his weaknesses. That is the attitude we all want to see from players, and I think RK will bring him back into the fold when he thinks he is ready. Great bit of man mangement on RK's part.

Trotter: I have read alot of comments on him most very negative, but RK must see something in the lad, though I think when Norris is fit.......

People keep talking about RK's bizarre decisions bad man management skills yet the players are all behind him. His most bizarre decision for me was to sell Jordon Rhoades. I would have played him at least one season just to see if he could do it. I know RK has said and he is right that every player is for sale if the right price comes in for him but he also said the bottom line is he puts the deal to the player and it is up to the player to decide if he wants it, not him or anybody else at the club. And he is happy if the player says no and wants to stay and fight for his place. Bottom line Jordon could have stayed if he really wanted too.

Finally R. Wright: A player I rate as the greatest Ipswich goal keeper of all time. When we finished 5th in the premiership to take us into Europe it was mainly because of two players. Marcus Steward scoring the goals, and R. Wright keeping them out. As a retired military man I understand why RK is resting RW, playing behind the worse defence I can remember seeing for Ipswich RW is shell shocked. But our player of the year last year is still the best goal keeper in this division.

As for this start to this season I have never seen anything like it in 40 years. We have been totally devoid of luck tht I am wondering if RK has pi$$ed off a leprechaun or something. They say though that luck evens itself out over the course of a season if that is true we have a huge dose of good luck coming our way.

Good Topic:

Delaney: Awful, but then i said he was after watching us down at QPR last season. Worst of Keane's signings
Martin: Promise, but not lived up to it yet. Doesn't look too interested to be honest. Keane knows it.
Healy: Haven't seen him yet!
Priskin: Jury is still out for me at the moment
Leadbitter: Quality through and through. Skipper for me.
Edwards: Quality again. Exciting to watch
Rosenior: Quality again, great pairing with Edwards on the right.
New Keeper...something 'itch: Looks decent so far. Claims everything in the box.

Tend to agree that we need to move on.

Surprised that at least one person really rates Trotter's contribution. You're the only one!

As for Walters being the best player on Tuesday. Couldn't disagree more. I really like Walters, but I think he's a shadow of himself up front. He doesn't have a striker's instinct for goal, doesn't hold the ball up and doesn't link up with Pablo (and Pablo is an excellent link-up player). He was so much better on the right - but Keane has bought Edwards there instead, which suggests Walters is up front for the long haul.

I also find it interesting that we are studying these signings objectively without at any point wondering why we're bottom of the league!

Maybe this is Why Keane Bought him?! - maybe trying to bring the old Delaney back?

Interesting comments - particularly those who question why we bought a player like Healy. Whilst Healy has not really impressed thus far, he has a remarkably similar story to one Jon Walters who, after not being able to get his career up and running with Bolton, and through family circumstances ended up going down the divisions landing at Chester City got given a break.

There is always a risk with these types of players, but that doesn't mean we shouldnt have taken a risk for £40k or whatever the fee was.

Lee Martin looks like his confidence is shot to pieces & who can blame him considering the utter mess we're in...the Delaney & Healey signings were an absolute joke and I think any of our supporters who know anything about football would've spotted that before signing them.
Priskin's been a success story too hasn't he?

We had a decent squad that only needed a couple of additions..this total rebuild/rehash will cost us very dearly unless "Keano" can turn the situation around sooner rather than later.

Q...I wonder how many Keane fans will still be backing him if we lose the next 2 or 3?

CIVEEEELLIIIIII!! Get him back, give Martin a bit of competition on the left. He's so strong for a winger, completely the opposite to Martin

Lightningboy - Answer to your question - i will still be backing him.
End of season will be my decision

Well, its quite simple really, bad scouting, bad fact finding and finally bad decision making - this makes BAD MANAGEMENT.
What makes it even worse is that the other day RK said amongst others that Delaney was a decent defender. When our manager makes comments like that then it does make you wonder . He obviously hasnt played his last game for us.

DO NONE OF YOU WATCH THE VIDEO I'VE PUT ON HERE?!
IT PROVES DELANEY CAN BE AWESOME - YOU JUST NEED TO GET IT OUT OF HIM - SAME AS GARVAN!

superflude... when ever we comment about Rhodes scoring for fun we are told it doesn t count as its in a lower league , so surely the same applies for your Delaney clip scoring against the likes of Hartlepool and Bristol Rovers ?

Watched the video - and yes it's a pretty special goal. But then I recall watching some vids of Sam Parkin banging in some impressive goals before he joined us....

Serioulsy, I hope Delaney can find some form, but so far he's looked out of his depth and not very interested.

superblueflude and PimsOclock - I agree with your logic. Also, did I almost spot a near positive comment tucked away in the usual criticism from itfc1981? Like almost everyone, I have been impressed with Leadbitter and Rosenior from the outset and Edwards more recently but, maybe, the others have found it difficult being in and out of a struggling side and not, therefore, getting any continuity or consistency. We expect professional footballers to perform every game but we must not forget they are humans not machines and all of us have good and bad days. I have mostly been underwhelmed by Priskin, Delaney and Martin but yet can see a decent player there even though I am not sure how they will get enough of a chance to prove it. We can't bring Delaney back yet as David Wright has been good since his belated return to the side and Martin deserved to be taken off at half time against Watford. As much as I acknowledge Wickham's immense potential, I would have preferred Priskin to be brought on ahead of him in the last 2 games as I feel his greater experience would have been of more benefit given the state of the games and our league position. So, I reserve judgement on all three players.

In summary, I don't think Roy Keane has chosen too badly but it has been mystifying why we have underperformed so badly until the last few games. I have seen few more entertaining performances over the last 2 years than the Watford game and I do feel that the elusive first win will ignite the season and see us climb the table.

I watched the reserves on Wednesday and considered Delaney was either unfit, lazy or was carrying an injury, although he played the whole 90 minutes. Priskin offered very little and was well marked by what looked like a 12 year old, Healey and Colback both showed glimpses but certainly didn't dominate the midfield. I could also see why Garvan and Stead are not in the first team squad. Bruce played the full 90 though.

Get off Trotter's back, Im not a massive fan and I much prefer Garvan, nevertheless I've see some decent play from Trotter, fantastic in the air and wins the ball. Keano was a midfield player himself, so I think he knows good midfield play better than any of us. He's a young player as well and I can see him developing really well, but it doesnt help with fans not supporting him. He also helped Scunthorpe win promotion last season, must be some merit there.

I wont defend Delaney, Healy or Martin tho!!

I think martin is a very good signing for ipswich. he brings pace flair creativity and although he is lightweight and his finishing aint his strong point he makes things happen and gets the crowd on there feet.

ill never prefer delany at lb wright in my view is the most consistant performer in teh ipswich side and never has a bad game in my view. however i feel delany can play a part at cb strong can make a very good tackle and good in the air.

healy and dell boy trotter on the other hand are useless

sORRY HIT THE WRONG BUTTON......we have to stick with Priskin for a few games to get his confidence back, playing along side Counago.Walters dropping in from wide midfield would give us better goal scoring options. Surely that is why Keanne is paid his big wage packet to get the players working as a unit.....but no !!!! All we get is players quoting how wonderful Keanne is all written by Mr Baxter.

I reckon it's 50/50 on RK's signings so far.

Leadbitter looks as though he could be the club's best signing since Shefki and he's much younger than the great man was when he arrived at the club. Rosenior and Edwards also look to have enhanced the team, I hope the former becomes a full Ipswich player in due course.

I need to see more of Priskin before concluding whether he's a good buy or not, he doesn't pass the test sitting on the bench week in week out.

Delaney, as left back, takes the team backwards. Let's see what he can do at centre back where we are weak to start with. Healy is at best a squad man - I can't see him being a first team regular.

For me the biggest disappointment, and biggest waste of money, has to be Martin. However clever he tries to be there is never any end product.

Interesting to see the comment re. Leadbitter and Garvan and drawing parallels to Gerrard and Lampard. I would go further and say that as in the case of Capello with Stevie G and Lamps, RK must find a way of accomodating two of the most gifted players at the club into his starting 11.

Someone asked about other ex-Town players who were bad signings - here is my "dream" (or nightmare) XI

in a 5-3-2 formation

GK - Andy Marshall
RB - Chris Makin
CB - Georges Santos
CB - Wayne Brown
CB - Drissa Diallo
LB - Dan Karbasiyoon
RM - Finidi George
CM - George O'Callaghan
LM - Ulrich Le Pen
CF - Adam Proudlock
CF - Dean McDonald

Bench:
CB - Manuel Thetis
CB/CM - Simon Walton
LB/LM - Matt Richards
CM - Jermaine Wright
LM - Gary Roberts
CF - Sam Parkin

I know some players played for a long time and were good servants to Town but personally they are the players I believe were not good enough to deserve to play for Town COYB first win on Saturday!!

on the signings, i think Leadbitter could become a legend as he is a top player whilst i am pleased with Edwards, Rosenior and Begovic. I think more is wanted and is hopefully to come from Priskin, Martin and even Delaney. I dont see the point of signing Healy but i guess he was only 60k

Excellent article. I certainly believe that Healy is a bad signing, Martin not worth £1.5M, but I can see Delaney being half decent at centre half!

For the poor signings, Leadbitter, Edwards and Rosinior look very good. The loan keeper is also a decent signing.

A very accurate post...3 good ones in (Leadbiter, Rosenoir, Edwards) 3 bad ones Martin, Delaney, Healey. The new keeper is another plus, hasn't had to do much, but his kicking and instant distribution is a dream. Great to have Wright back at fullback, and full marks for giving youngsters Trotter and Smith a good chance...they are looking stronger by the game. Garvan could be a good addition on the left of midfield (twice the player of Martin), but too slow and lightweight for the centre midfield. The main striker is the problem...give Priskin a run of games...can he be the one? at least give him the chance to do it, Wicham is one for the future, but an International striker for should be for now?
Cevelli and Norris to come back in the new year...not too soon before good times come back to PR

Must say i disagree, i think what you hinted at the start is true, that the blame should be aimed at the manager, he watches the players, decides wheher they are good enough at this level, and pays the money that he think they are worth, which in my opinion, they havn't been so far, (Martin-2M, Delaney-600K, Priskin-1.7M) admittedly Priskin hasn't been given a proper chance yet, but why not? Surely if hes worth that much, then he should be on the pitch, not being beaten to the first team by a sixteen year old and a right midfielder, no?
